Choosing camera resolution

Buy the resolution the scene needs. Extra megapixels without the right lens and light just fill the NVR.

2MP (1080p) is enough for a small shop door, a store room, or a home corridor where you need to see that someone is there — not to read a number plate from 20 metres.

4MP is the usual shop and office spec. It holds faces at a till and plates at a gate if the lens and mounting height are right. Starlight 4MP turrets keep colour after dark instead of dropping to grainy IR.

8MP / 4K is for wide yards, glass facades and sites that crop a face from a wide shot. It needs more storage and a recorder that can write 4K per channel. Polar Day and Starlight matter more here than the megapixel number alone.
